The venue

Thames Rowing Club has been on Putney Embankment since 1860, at the start of the Championship Course. It is a working rowing club first — members are out on the water most mornings, and the building is theirs before it is anybody's venue.

The clubhouse rooms look over the tideway and take dinners, receptions and daytime meetings. Commercial hire is built around training, racing and club fixtures rather than through them.

What we run

We are the events department at Thames. Enquiries come to us, we run the viewings, we write and hold the contracts, and we appoint and brief the caterers and suppliers who work in the building.

We staff the events and run them on the night, so nobody from the committee is locking up at midnight. The club calendar sits above the commercial one — regatta weekends, head races and member fixtures are blocked before a date goes on sale.

The committee gets a written report: what sold, what was turned down and why, what is in the diary, and what the events side earned.

The building in use

  • A club room dressed for an evening: dining tables laid beyond leather armchairs, with a stage and drum kit set up under the pitched roof
  • Long tables laid the length of the hall for a dinner, blades overhead and crew photographs down the walls
  • The room dressed for a party, a dance floor laid and leather armchairs grouped under the arched windows
  • Leather sofas along a panelled room hung with framed crews and portraits, arched doors at the far end
